Making Sense of the Bible

Parallel Account of Jesus' Trial Before Pilate

Matthew Mark Luke John
MT 27:1 Now when morning had come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put Him to death; [2] and they bound Him, and led Him away, and delivered Him up to Pilate the governor. MK 15:1 And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes, and the whole Council, immediately held a consultation; and binding Jesus, they led Him away, and delivered Him up to Pilate.  LK 23:1 Then the whole body of them arose and brought Him before Pilate. JN 18:28 They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium, and it was early; and they themselves did not enter into the Praetorium in order that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.
[2] And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this man misleading our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."  [29] Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?" [30] They answered and said to him, "If this Man were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you." [31] Pilate therefore said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and judge Him according to your law." The Jews said to him, "We are not permitted to put anyone to death," [32] that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which He spoke, signifying by what kind of death He was about to die.
MT 27:11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor questioned Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And Jesus said to him, "It is as you say." [12] And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He made no answer. [13] Then Pilate said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?" [14] And He did not answer him with regard to even a single charge, so that the governor was quite amazed. [2] And Pilate questioned Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And answering He said to him, "It is as you say." [3] And the chief priests began to accuse Him harshly. [4] And Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, "Do You make no answer? See how many charges they bring against You!" [5] But Jesus made no further answer; so that Pilate was amazed. [3] And Pilate asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" And He answered him and said, "It is as you say."

[4] And Pilate said to the chief priests and the multitudes, "I find no guilt in this man." [5] But they kept on insisting, saying, "He stirs up the people, teaching all over Judea, starting from Galilee, even as far as this place."

JN 18:33 Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, and summoned Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?" [34] Jesus answered, "Are you saying this on your own initiative, or did others tell you about Me?" [35] Pilate answered, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered You up to me; what have You done?" [36] Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, then My servants would be fighting, that I might not be delivered up to the Jews; but as it is, My kingdom is not of this realm." [37] Pilate therefore said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." [38] Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?"
[6] But when Pilate heard it, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. [7] And when he learned that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod, who himself also was in Jerusalem at that time.

LK 23:8 Now Herod was very glad when he saw Jesus; for he had wanted to see Him for a long time, because he had been hearing about Him and was hoping to see some sign performed by Him. [9] And he questioned Him at some length; but He answered him nothing. [10] And the chief priests and the scribes were standing there, accusing Him vehemently. [11] And Herod with his soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent Him back to Pilate. [12] Now Herod and Pilate became friends with one another that very day; for before they had been at enmity with each other.

LK 23:13 And Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people, [14] and said to them, "You brought this man to me as one who incites the people to rebellion, and behold, having examined Him before you, I have found no guilt in this man regarding the charges which you make against Him. [15] "No, nor has Herod, for he sent Him back to us; and behold, nothing deserving death has been done by Him. [16] "I will therefore punish Him and release Him."
[15] Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to release for the multitude any one prisoner whom they wanted. [16] And they were holding at that time a notorious prisoner, called Barabbas. [17] When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said to them, "Whom do you want me to release for you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?" [18] For he knew that because of envy they had delivered Him up.  MK 15:6 Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. [7] And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection.  [17] [Now he was obliged to release to them at the feast one prisoner.]  JN 18:38 And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no guilt in Him. [39] "But you have a custom, that I should release someone for you at the Passover; do you wish then that I release for you the King of the Jews?" [40] Therefore they cried out again, saying, "Not this Man, but Barabbas." Now Barabbas was a robber.
[19] And while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, "Have nothing to do with that righteous Man; for last night I suffered greatly in a dream because of Him."
[20] But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes to ask for Barabbas, and to put Jesus to death. [21] But the governor answered and said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release for you?" And they said, "Barabbas." [22] Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?" They all said, "Let Him be crucified!"  [8] And the multitude went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. [9] And Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?" [10] For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him up because of envy. [11] But the chief priests stirred up the multitude to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. [12] And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, "Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?" [13] And they shouted back, "Crucify Him!"  [18] But they cried out all together, saying, "Away with this man, and release for us Barabbas!" [19] (He was one who had been thrown into prison for a certain insurrection made in the city, and for murder.)
[23] And he said, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"  [14] But Pilate was saying to them, "Why, what evil has He done?" But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"  [20] And Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again, [21] but they kept on calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!" [22] And he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has this man done? I have found in Him no guilt demanding death; I will therefore punish Him and release Him." [23] But they were insistent, with loud voices asking that He be crucified. And their voices began to prevail.
[24] And when Pilate saw that he was accomplishing nothing, but rather that a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of this Man's blood; see to that yourselves." [25] And all the people answered and said, "His blood be on us and on our children!" [26] Then he released Barabbas for them; but after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified. [15] And wishing to satisfy the multitude, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be crucified. [24] And Pilate pronounced sentence that their demand should be granted. [25] And he released the man they were asking for who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, but he delivered Jesus to their will.
MT 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him. [28] And they stripped Him, and put a scarlet robe on Him. [29] And after weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they kneeled down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!" [30] And they spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.   MK 15:16 And the soldiers took Him away into the palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called together the whole Roman cohort. [17] And they dressed Him up in purple, and after weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on Him; [18] and they began to acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" [19] And they kept beating His head with a reed, and spitting at Him, and kneeling and bowing before Him.  JN 19:1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged Him. [2] And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and arrayed Him in a purple robe; [3] and they began to come up to Him, and say, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and to give Him blows in the face.
[4] And Pilate came out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no guilt in Him." [5] Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold, the Man!" [6] When therefore the chief priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate said to them, "Take Him yourselves, and crucify Him, for I find no guilt in Him." [7] The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and by that law He ought to die because He made Himself out to be the Son of God."
[8] When Pilate therefore heard this statement, he was the more afraid; [9] and he entered into the Praetorium again, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. [10] Pilate therefore said to Him, "You do not speak to me? Do You not know that I have authority to release You, and I have authority to crucify You?" [11] Jesus answered, "You would have no authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above; for this reason he who delivered Me up to you has the greater sin."
[12] As a result of this Pilate made efforts to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you release this Man, you are no friend of Caesar; everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar." [13] When Pilate therefore heard these words, he brought Jesus out, and sat down on the judgment seat at a place called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha. [14] Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold, your King!" [15] They therefore cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."
[31] And after they had mocked Him, they took His robe off and put His garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him. [20] And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, and put His garments on Him. And they led Him out to crucify Him. [16] So he then delivered Him to them to be crucified.
